Sunday, October 9, the St. John’s Choir offers J.S. Bach’s motet Singet dem Herrn ein neues lied (Sing to the Lord a new song).

Among the most ambitious of Bach’s motets, Singet dem Herrn is written for double choir in three movements. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was reportedly so deeply moved upon hearing the work on a visit to Leipzig in 1789 that he requested permission to see the music and proceeded to copy out the parts to take back to Vienna.
