Sunday, October 9, the St. John’s Choir offers J.S. Bach’s motet Singet dem Herrn ein neues lied (Sing to the Lord a new song).
Among the most ambitious of Bach’s motets, Singet dem Herrn is written for double choir in three movements. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was reportedly so deeply moved upon hearing the work on a visit to Leipzig in 1789 that he requested permission to see the music and proceeded to copy out the parts to take back to Vienna.

Under the direction of T. Herbert Dimmock, four talented soloists–Elissa Edwards, Soprano; Kristen Dubenion-Smith, Alto; Ben Ellerin, Tenor; and Carl DuPont, Bass–the full Bach in Baltimore Choir & Orchestra bring the Hebrew Biblical story of the prophet Elijah to life.
Elijah, Mendelssohn’s most famous oratorio, was heavily inspired by the cantatas of J.S. Bach. Mendelssohn’s keen musicological recovery and revival efforts throughout the nineteenth century resurrected the music of J.S. Bach back into the public psyche. After Bach’s death, his music fell out of style and was relegated to music students and practice studios rather than in concert halls for public enjoyment. Mendelssohn famously brought Bach back into fashion with his knockout performance of the St. Matthew Passion.
Mendelssohn’s Elijah is a thrilling, soaring work whose structure calls to mind the sacred music of Bach that so enthused and inspired him. Acclaimed from its first premiere in 1846, this Elijah alone has cemented Mendelssohn’s place in history as one of the greatest composers of sacred music.
To learn more specifically about Mendelssohn’s piece, join Maestro Dimmock in Bach in Baltimore’s Musical Notes with Maestro.

Celebrate this year’s Twelfth Night by candlelight in the historic ballroom of the Hammond-Harwood House. Join us for an evening of music, poetry and merrymaking at our annual tradition! This year will feature cantatas and arias by Italian composers Claudio Monteverdi, Alessandro Scarlatti and Claudio Merulo, along with traditional carols of the season. Critically acclaimed soprano, Elissa Edwards, is joined by Dr. Joyce Chen on harpsichord and dramatic poetic recitations by Katrina Atsinger.
Edwards is artist-in-residence at the museum and is hailed for her 'pliant, seductive, free-ranging voice’ (Gramophone) and her 'glistening tone' (Early Music America). The close of the Christmas season on the 6th of January was known in the past as Old Twelfth Night and it was a moment given over to mischief and merrymaking.
This is our most popular event of the year and due to COVID restrictions, we have limited seating for live audience and we encourage early booking.
